SUMMARY:Exchanging and Protecting Personal Data in a Globalised World
DESCRIPTION:The rapid digitisation of economic and social life has made the cross-border exchange of personal data a central element of global cooperation\, trade\, and innovation. At the same time\, repeated cases of misuse of personal data across the world – affecting both citizens and high-profile personalities – have strengthened awareness that personal data protection is a fundamental human right. In Europe\, this principle is firmly embedded in law and practice through the EU’s comprehensive data protection framework\, most prominently the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).  \nThe EU data protection framework is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive regulatory models and is frequently used as a reference by policymakers and regulators worldwide. Many countries are currently developing or adapting their own legal frameworks for data protection\, often drawing inspiration from aspects of the EU model. Nevertheless\, the importance attributed to personal data protection varies across jurisdictions\, reflecting different legal traditions\, economic priorities\, and governance structures.  \nIn a globalised digital economy where data flows transcend borders\, broader cooperation and knowledge exchange are essential to ensure trusted and secure international data transfers.  \nPurpose of the Webinar \nThis webinar aims to strengthen international dialogue on personal data protection by bringing together experts and stakeholders from Europe and key partner countries to discuss the evolving global landscape of data governance.  \nThe webinar will contribute to increasing awareness of the EU personal data protection framework and its relevance for international data flows. At the same time\, it will create a platform for mutual learning by highlighting policy developments\, regulatory initiatives\, and best practices emerging in partner countries.  \nThe discussion will focus in particular on Serbia\, India\, Tunisia\, and Kenya\, offering a comparative perspective across different regions and regulatory environments.  \nObjectives \nThe webinar will pursue the following objectives:  \n\nStrengthen understanding of the importance of personal data protection for international data flows and digital trade. \nPromote awareness of the EU personal data protection legal framework and its global relevance. \nFacilitate exchange of knowledge on best practices\, policy initiatives\, and legislative developments in Serbia\, Tunisia\, Kenya\, and India.\nEncourage dialogue among policymakers\, experts\, civil society organisations\, and private sector stakeholders on global approaches to data governance. \nIdentify opportunities for cooperation and alignment to support trusted cross-border data exchanges.\n\nAgenda\nDuration: 90 minutes  \n\n\n\n09:00 – 09:05 CET\nWelcome and Opening Remarks\nModerator: Anna Aseva (Martel Innovate)\n\n\n\n09:05 – 09:15 CET\nThe EU Personal Data Protection Framework in a Global Context\nAnna Aseeva (Martel Innovate) \nThe presentation will explore key principles of the EU data protection framework and the GDPR; the role of data protection in enabling trusted international data flows; and the EU model as a global reference point.\n\n\n09:15 – 09:55 CET\nNational Perspectives and Regulatory Developments\nIrena Milobratovic (Regulatory Expert & Advisor)\nKamel Rezgui (Public & Digital Law Expert)\nJohn Walubengo (ICT Governance\, Security\, Policy & Strategy Expert)\nAjai Garg (Consultant on Global Trade\, Policy & Compliance for Digital Technologies) \nThe presentations will dive into national data protection frameworks from Serbia\, Tunisia\, Kenya\, and India. \n\n\n09:55 – 10:25 CET\nPanel Discussion: Aligning Data Protection Approaches in a Globalised Digital Economy\nModerated discussion with speakers \nThe panel discussion will cover key challenges for cross-border data flows; convergences and differences in regulatory approaches; and opportunities for cooperation between regions. \n\n\n10:25 – 10:30 CET  \nClosing Remarks\nAnna Aseeva (Martel Innovate)\n\n\n\n
