The rapid digitisation of economic and social life has made the cross-border exchange of personal data a central element of global cooperation, trade, and innovation. At the same time, repeated cases of misuse of personal data across the world – affecting both citizens and high-profile personalities – have strengthened awareness that personal data protection is a fundamental human right. In Europe, this principle is firmly embedded in law and practice through the EU’s comprehensive data protection framework, most prominently the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The EU data protection framework is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive regulatory models and is frequently used as a reference by policymakers and regulators worldwide. Many countries are currently developing or adapting their own legal frameworks for data protection, often drawing inspiration from aspects of the EU model. Nevertheless, the importance attributed to personal data protection varies across jurisdictions, reflecting different legal traditions, economic priorities, and governance structures.
In a globalised digital economy where data flows transcend borders, broader cooperation and knowledge exchange are essential to ensure trusted and secure international data transfers.
Purpose of the Webinar
This webinar aims to strengthen international dialogue on personal data protection by bringing together experts and stakeholders from Europe and key partner countries to discuss the evolving global landscape of data governance.
The webinar will contribute to increasing awareness of the EU personal data protection framework and its relevance for international data flows. At the same time, it will create a platform for mutual learning by highlighting policy developments, regulatory initiatives, and best practices emerging in partner countries.
The discussion will focus in particular on Serbia, India, Tunisia, and Kenya, offering a comparative perspective across different regions and regulatory environments.
